Barbera Academy High School is a public high school located in Brooklyn, New York. Many of the victims and persons of interest in the Mad Batter serial killer investigation once attended the school, a fact that school officials typically exclude from promotional materials.

Behind the scenes

Barbera Academy High School is a fictional institution. (It does not appear in the list of high schools in New York City.) The author of the Gray Gaynes series has indicated that this moniker—like other titles or character/place names in the series—is a pop culture or literary reference to one of the mystery stories he enjoyed in his youth. According to the acknowledgments from Gray Rose:

Special thanks go to both my sons for their enduring love of a certain Saturday morning mystery-solving cartoon that I myself loved as a child, which inspired the name and mascot of the fictional high school attended by Matty Di Buca. It worked out well, considering that show’s producer (and thus the school’s namesake) was himself a Brooklynite.
