"Rose-Colored Glasses" is a short story by R.L. Akers, published on October 15, 2025 as an exclusive inclusion in the Gray in the City anthology of murder mysteries.
Unlike major installments (numbered novellas) in the Files of Gray Gaynes series, "Rose-Colored Glasses" itself does not feature a murder mystery—or even really any crime at all. Instead, the story gives a poignant glimpse of Gray Gaynes' last day with his wife Rose before her murder.
Artwork
As with each Gray Gaynes installment, the chapter numbering within "Rose-Colored Glasses" is unique. In this case, each chapter begins with a number of paint splatters (one for chapter 1, two for 2, etc.). This is a reference to Rose's calling as an artist, while keeping thematically consistent with the red blood spatter that graces every main series novella cover.
